SOUND HOUSE
Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 July
As part of her month long residency at Modern Art Oxford, artist Sarah Kenchington
transformed a decommissioned, semi-detached Orlit house on Oxford’s Rose Hill
estate into a Sound House.
42 Lenthall Road provided the context, structure and inspiration for Kenchington to
harness the property's acoustic potential and transform the house into a
giant musical instrument. Kenchington’s audio response made full use of the building’s fabric – its central heating system, plumbing, cupboards and doors – in a way that was sensitive not only to the house, but also to the residual traces of its recent inhabitants.
Over the weekend of 11 and 12 July, visitors were invited to create the sound-scape and 'play' the house through participating with Kenchington’s carefully crafted acoustic experiments.
